Shuttleworth Smart Conveyor Rollers Provide Precise Transport of Syringes

Oct 24, 2012

Huntington, IN — Shuttleworth, powered by ProMach, expands its Slip-Torque® material handling product line with a new solution for handling syringes. Shuttleworth syringe conveyors provide precise, continuous transport that improves throughput and minimizes product damage.

Shuttleworth’s low back-pressure accumulation and transport system for syringes absorbs irregularities in product movement allowing precise placement and smooth, steady flow regardless of product weight and size. As a result, product jamming, scuffing and shingling are also reduced.

“Opportunities for product damage decrease dramatically when line stoppages are minimized,” said Todd Eckert, Shuttleworth product manager. “Line efficiency and throughput increase, and as a result so does profitability.”

Shuttleworth’s Slip-Torque system for syringe transport uses individually-powered, roller shafts covered with loose, segmented rollers. As the weight of the product increases or decreases, there is a corresponding change to the driving force of the rollers. When the syringes stop on the conveyor, the segmented rollers beneath them also stop, generating low back-pressure accumulation. Product vibration, contaminant transference, abrasion and product damage are all minimized.

Customers can configure the syringe conveying system into multiple, independently-operating lanes. For example, the middle lane can accumulate, while at the same time the right lane and the left lane can convey, or even run in opposite directions. Each lane can act independently even though it is powered by one common motor.

The systems provides customers the flexibility to set variable speeds for different sections of the conveyor from a central PLC with a user friendly Human Machine Interface. Customers can also use the system to minimize product contact while steering or orienting syringe tubs with uneven bottoms into desired locations of the conveyor.

Shuttleworth also offers pharmaceutical companies a variation of Slip-Torque called Slip-Trak.® Drive components are fully enclosed in an evacuation chamber to eliminate airborne particulate contamination. The system also accommodates open-center or edge carry conveying.

Shuttleworth revolutionized material handling technology with its first generation of Slip-Torque technology 30 years ago. Since that time, Slip-Torque technology has been installed in more than 15,000 applications.
